28ga TSS Steel Duplex Patterns

Postby bullet225ho » Mon Dec 25, 2017 11:03 pm

Here are a few patterns of some loads I put together the last couple of days.
One of the main things I was wanting to figure out is how tight does the TSS pattern and what will the pattern do on top or bottom.
I know Toasty prefers TSS on bottom to "push" through the steel and open it up. My loads are using 1/2oz of 8.5 TSS instead of 1/4oz. I saw another thread were Hal had stated on heavier TSS dplx rounds the patterns were better with TSS on top.

At any rate I have a few duplex loads to show.....And the results to me are enlightening.

All shots were from 40yds with a 28" barrel with a labeled Skeet choak (mic at .547)

Following pattern is a Toasty load variant. 1/2oz 8.5 TSS and 3/8oz #4 steel, Rio Hull, cheddite Primer. TPS Wad, LilGun powder. TSS on TOP

The second is of the same load as above....but with the TSS on BOTTOM.

In the TSS Top pattern there are 47 #4 shot inside the 30" cir at 40yds. There were 74+- 4 pellets in the load to start with. So if I do the reverse patterning equation At 30yrds there would be 67 #4 pellets and at 25 All them would theoretically be within the 30" cir. This totally defeats the purpose of duplexing (for what I want it do atleast)

The second pattern with TSS on Bottom looks a bit more promising for my intentions. 28 #4 steel in the 30" circle and basically all the TSS (141) At this point the Steel is doing no good as the energy is gone....So I want the steel blooming early...In this pattern the math says at 30yds 40 #4 would be in the circle and at 20 there would be 57 and at 10 yards All 74 pellets would be in the circle....but at 15yrds the 4s are starting to leave the circle....this is the blooming....exactly what Toasty has talked about.

The next pattern is basically the Toasty load except I went 219gn of TSS 8.5 and 202grn of #4 Steel. Cheddite Hull, TPS wads and no spacers, fillers...just shot and wad filled to the proper crimping point. (that's why its 202gn of steel....the other 7 pellets wouldnt fit.
At any rate.

Here's the TSS on BOTTOM

Looking at this it looks very similar to the first load. except a bit more exagerated (which I like)
These loads have appr 92 #4s and 150 TSS 8.5
The TSS top load had 67 steel pellets inside the 30" circle at 40yds. reverse the math....All Steel would be inside the 30" at 30yds. Again. Useless for my intentions.

The TSS on bottom however is a bit different. 25#4 steel at 40...would equate to 35 at 30yds, 51 at 20yds and 73 #4 pellets at 10yds....That means there is a full 30" of shot in the air at less than 10yds (by the equation) actually 19 pellets outside the circle at 10yrds.
I'd say this is "blooming" very soon and would be great for close in shots.

What chokes are you using??

Roll with it. If you stay above 55 the wheel wont fall off.

Sorry it took so long,

This is with 28" barrel and Imp/Cyl labeled factory choke. I measured it at .547
