bear loads - #1 Buck

A couple guys have been playing with heavy bear loads and tried some #1 buck.

Here's a 60 yd pattern of 2.6 oz of #1 Buck through a 10 ga and .767 choke....

The idea for these guys is to be able to stop a charging bear in it's tracks. I'm certain it will do that.

Ok, So curiosity got to me.

as per KPY this load (if traveling at 1100 fps) will have a total ft lb of energy of 1952.28 at 60yds.

Thats if all 18 pellets hit said target....Wow That's a lot of energy.

compared....10ga 18 pellets of 00 buckshot lead load traveling at 1100 gives 1,328.4 ft lb of energy at 60 yds.

so 624 ftlbs more energy than a much larger lead equivalent.


Here's the kicker.... TSS has 12.44" of gel penetration
Lead 00 buck. at same distance 7.58" of gel penetration

Is there a better option for small bore (.410) closer distance (25yards) in a short barrel revolver, or even a lever .410 (axe) I’m reading in depth on theory and application of certain pellet sizes, wound trauma, and penetration/over penetration for bear and predator defense. Not looking to hunt with it, just maybe make a suitable option for a gun that has many purposes in the backcountry. Essentially, all
One would need is to buy the shot if the application makes sense.
