20 Gauge for coyote???

Postby Uncle Steve » Sat Feb 17, 2018 8:03 pm

Over the last 2-3 days since i found this wonderful site is seems to me that with TSS the 20 gauge will take coyote's.

It looks like a load of #2,3,or 4 shot would work well out of a 20 gauge without the weight and recoil of a 12 gauge.
Am I wrong on this? should i just stick to the 12 and get the reloading press for it or start looking into the 20 gauge?

Has any one already gone down this path?

Thanks
Steve

There are guys moving in that direction, and I may have some reports before too long...

But I am very confident a 20 ga will do wonderfully for coyotes in those shot sizes.

I know some of the guys here think that TSS is the end all be all as far as shot. With that, I agree to a point. But shooting at coyotes with a 20ga is just not a good idea. Stick to the 12ga with shot at least size 2 (possibly size 4 out in the wide open areas). A 20ga just can't carry the payload needed to anchor running dogs out past 45-50yds I'm afraid.

I don't think we need to get out past 45- 50 yards here in the north east. It's like grouse hunting, really big grouse with teeth, but close in. If i can see past 50 yards I can see out to 100 yards and i am on a trail and should be using a rifle, most of the time I am in the woods and can only see out to 30 or 40 yards any way. I just think it would be nice to carry a light quick gun into the woods and it would be nice for when my son and daughter get a little older so they are not getting lambasted with a 12 gauge.

I think a 1 oz or 1-1/8 oz 20 ga load of TSS #4 shot would do a good job on coyotes at 40 yards and under. It would have the penetration to kill them much farther than that if the pattern is dense enough to put enough pellets into the coyotes vitals.

TSS #4 shot at 1200 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 72.7 yards 1-1/8 oz would be about 93 pellets.
FED HW 15g/cc #2 shot at 1250 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 67.3 yards with 90 pellets in 1-1/2 oz
Nickel Plated Lead BB shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 46 yards with about 77 pellets in a 1-1/2 oz load.

I have killed quite a few coyotes with the Federal Heavyweight #2 shot that is 15g/cc, with the shot I have there is 90 pellets in each 1-1/2 oz load. The TSS #4 shot has about the same amount of pellets in a 1-1/8 oz load and it out penetrates the FHW #2 shot by a little bit.

Compare the 20 ga TSS #4 shot 1-1/8 oz load to the Nickel Plated lead BB 3" 12 ga1-1/2 oz load. There are two different 3" 12ga factory lead BB coyote loads being sold now that I know of. Since the TSS 1-1/8 oz load of #4 shot has 16 more pellets and gets the same penetration 26 yards farther away than the Nickel Plated BB 3" 12 ga coyote load I think it would work pretty good on coyotes.

If you have a 3" 20 ga and could load up 1-3/8 oz or 1-1/2 oz TSS loads for coyotes that would be even better.

Thanks Bob, Here in the north east it is pretty tight cover. i am going to start taking the range finder with me to survey the woods and see what the actual distances are in the woods. I don't think it will be much more than 40 yards of visibility.
