More TSS in duplex question...

Postby iawiley » Fri Feb 09, 2018 3:45 pm

I have been spiking my steel duck loads with a 1/4 ounce of TSS 9 1/2's for a few seasons now and love them.... but have been wondering about doing the same for a goose load. My question is this... has anyone tried using a little more Tss in these loads than the standard quarter ounce? I wondered about using a half ounce in some of my goose loads... then top it with big steel. Would this kill the velocity too much even if I used the high end of the Lightning Steel manual loads? I'm sure I would have to use some sort of wad filler perhaps... would this change the pressure too much? Just curious as I would like to use a little bigger TSS but still keep the pellet count good enough to kill ducks as well, as we shoot a lot of both ducks and greater honkers while hunting....

Once I got into a significant portion of the shot being TSS, I would probably stop using the "replace steel shot with TSS is OK" rule of thumb, and look for tested data. Hal has quite a few duplex loads I believe of like 50% each shot, if you purchase from him I expect you could PM and ask for what he has.

Recommend you do some calcs and decide what you want for your steel shot size, and your pellet count totals-- this will quickly give you what total payload and fractions you need.

Here's some calcs on a 1oz load (lightning steel style) using #1 steel and #B steel with tss 9 thru 7.5. First two columns are price per box and per shell. Lst 2 columns give total pellets and 75% choke totals.
INPUT size stl pellets 2nd shot plts choke
stl gr gr/plt steel size TSS gr TSS gr/plt TSS pellets Total gr Ttl pellets 75%

$23.02 $0.92 350 #1 4.292582418 81.536 TSS #9 87.5 1.224152886 71.478 437.5 153 115
$23.02 $0.92 350 #1 4.292582418 81.536 TSS #8.5 87.5 1.468317895 59.592 437.5 141 106
$34.13 $1.37 300 #B 5.148876074 58.26514286 TSS #8 137.5 1.742958448 78.88885714 437.5 137 103
$34.13 $1.37 300 #B 5.148876074 58.26514286 TSS #7.5 137.5 2.049948458 67.07485714 437.5 125 94

So I like that 2nd row: 350 gr of #1 steel gives 81 pellets, the remaining 1oz total is made up by 87.5 gr of TSS #8.5 which contributes 60 pellets, for a total of 141 pellets or 106 from a 75% choke. The TSS gives 55 yards or so penetration 2.25" gel for geese, and the #1 steel you have your own feel for.

Hmmmm, guess I'll have to get ahold of Hal and see what he has.... I'd rather use atleast BBB or T's on our late honkers, just don't wanna lose the down range penetration by going down to 1's or B's.
