Initial Testing of BIG 20 XL Load Data in Browning BPS 20 Gauge

Postby fnsup » Mon Feb 11, 2019 9:37 pm

I wanted to share a couple of photos and a quick video with everyone of my initial attempt at hand loading TSS shells. I'm using the BIG 20 XL 20 gauge load data from Hal (Fiocchi 3", 1 5/8oz, TSS #9) in a Browning BPS 20 gauge shotgun with an Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike (.555) choke.

The temperature was hovering around 52 degrees. Initial results yielded 258 pellet count in a 10" circle at 40yds. I plan to do some additional testing as it begins to warm up to see how the pattern density changes.

Photos include 20yd, 30yd, and 40yd pattern results in addition to how my first batch of shells turned out.

You can watch the video of the 40yd shot at the following URL:

Thanks Hal!

For comparison purposes I also tested a 3", 1 1/4 oz, Hevi-Shot #6 shell which is what we've shot through this gun up until now under the same conditions this weekend and the pattern density at 40yds came out to 104 pellets in a 10" circle at its most dense point. So we saw an increase from a 104 pellet count up to 258 pellet count, understanding this is not an apples to apples comparison due to payload differences, etc. Still cool to see the pattern density change drastically using TSS #9 shot. The turkeys here in SC should beware!
